Lorana Bartels is Professor and Program Leader of Criminology at the ANU. She was previously Head of the School of Law and Justice at the University of Canberra and has also worked at the Australian Institute of Criminology, Family Court of Australia, NSW Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, NSW Public Defenders Office and NSW Attorney-General's Department.
Professor Bartels is Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Canberra and University of Tasmania, a Life Member of Clare Hall at the University of Cambridge, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law and 2018 ACT Woman Lawyer of the Year - Community & Academic.
She is a member of the ACT Law Society Criminal Law Committee; ACT Reducing Recidivism Advisory Group; Australian and New Zealand, British and European Society of Criminology; Australian Lawyers for Human Rights; International Mainstreaming Therapeutic Jurisprudence Advisory Group; International Society for Therapeutic Jurisprudence Global Advisory Council; National Sentencing Network Leadership Committee; Prisoners Aid ACT Management Committee; SHINE for Kids Research Practice and Advocacy Advisory Group; and Women Lawyers Association ACT. She is also a member of the editorial boards of the Alternative Law Journal, Criminal Law Journal, International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology and SAGE Handbook of Domestic Violence.
Professor Bartels’ publications include three books and over refereed 80 journal articles, book chapters and conference papers, as well as consultancy reports for the ACT Chief Magistrate, ACT Justice and Community Safety Directorate, Corrections Victoria, Indigenous Justice Clearinghouse and Tasmanian Sentencing Advisory Council.
Professor Bartels’ research focuses on various aspects of the criminal justice system. Her key areas of interest are:
- courts and sentencing, including therapeutic jurisprudence;
- prisons, community corrections and correctional policy; and
- the treatment of women and Indigenous peoples in the criminal justice system.
