TRIC Award for Anti-Corruption Research

TRIC Award is an award for later-year PhD Candidates and Early Career Researchers to enable participation in an international event.

Introduction and Recognition

Each year, the Directors of Transnational Research Institute on Corruption (TRIC) will offer one prize known as the Transnational Research Institute on Corruption Award for Anti-Corruption Research (TRIC Award).

The objective of the prize is to sponsor a later-year PhD candidate or early career researcher to travel internationally to an academic conference, symposium, workshop or similar to share their research and build networks within their field.

The value of the prize/s awarded is no more than $5,000.

The prize will be initially on offer in 2024 and 2025.

In 2020, TRIC successfully nominated Professor Adam Graycar for the International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award (ACE) The ACE Award has enabled the creation of the TRIC Award.

Eligibility

The TRIC Award is available each year to a higher degree research (HDR) student enrolled in any Australian university who is:

  1. A domestic or international HDR student;
  2. Has completed at least one year of their HDR candidacy
  3. Has submitted a paper to TRIC which has been judged by the Directors to meet the following criteria
    1. The paper is original research which at least 50% has been authored by the applicant
    2. The paper Is of, or is close to, publishable quality
    3. Addresses directly the topic of corruption or anti-corruption in any academic discipline
    4. The paper is not related to data corruption or similar from computing sciences
  4. Has provided details of the academic conference, symposium workshop or similar where they wish to present the paper.

or

an Australian Academic appointee who is:

  1. An Early Career Researcher as defined by the Australian Research Council
  2. Academic Level A or Academic Level B
  3. A permanent resident in Australia
  4. Has submitted a paper to TRIC which has been judged by the Directors to meet the criteria outlined per HDR students above.
  5. Has provided details of the academic conference, symposium workshop or similar where they wish to present the paper.

Selection and Constraints

Selection is made from all papers submitted for the award to TRIC, which meet the criteria outlined above.

TRIC will determine the composition of the judging panel, and their decision is not subject to any appeal.

Papers must be received by 1 February of the award year to be considered. The award year is the calendar year in which the academic conference, symposium, workshop or similar is scheduled.

TRIC reserves the right to make no award if it considers there is no applicant of sufficient merit.

The TRIC Award cannot be used for a domestic conference, symposium, workshop or similar in Australia.

Recipient obligations

The awarding of a prize is based on the information provided to the University. A prize may be declined by the recipient once they have been notified as the prize winner. This must be provided in writing to the TRIC administrator and the Centre Manager of POLIS by emailing admin.tric@anu.edu.au  and polis.admin@anu.edu.au  no later than two weeks from notification.

If the TRIC Award is accepted by the recipient, they agree to the Publication of their name.

In some instances, the recipient may be asked to provide a reflective statement and perhaps participate in marketing activities.

The recipient is responsible for all administrative paperwork associated with international travel as per any relevant ANU Policies, Procedures and Guidelines, or policies that apply in their university.

Payment of the TRIC Award

The TRIC Award is jointly administered by TRIC and POLIS: The Centre for Social Policy Research (POLIS).

The purpose of the TRIC Award is to enable the winner to attend an international conference / symposium / event where they will present their work. The TRIC Award will cover expenses incurred for transport, meals, accommodation and registration for the conference /symposium or event up to AUD $5000. The TRIC Award will not cover travel insurance (which would normally be covered by the recipient's university).

Payment of the award can be in the form of:

  1. Reimbursement of expenses incurred by the recipient up to $5,000; or
  2. Reimbursement of expenses incurred by the recipient’s university up to $5,000; or
  3.  A combination of the above up to $5,000.

Review of the TRIC Award

The TRIC Award will be reviewed:

  1. At the conclusion of the period outlined in section 1; or
  2. If any eligibility requirements are to be amended; or
  3. After three years

Whichever is earliest.

Variations on the Conditions of the TRIC Award

In exceptional circumstances and on a case-by-case basis, these conditions of TRIC Award may be varied by the Executive Director of TRIC on the recommendation of the other TRIC Directors.
